DAN-GUERE

MINIATURE MASK

Miniature mask from the Dan complex, measuring only 11 cm in height, yet extending far beyond the usual spectrum of so-called passport masks. The forehead is distinctly domed; the eyes are set deep within a recessed field and accentuated with metal plates. The two larger teeth positioned closer to the center are also of metal, flanked by two smaller organic teeth of animal origin. Cheeks and mouth are powerfully modeled, giving the mask an exceptional presence despite its small scale.

Numerous perforations along the edges show pronounced abrasion; at least one opening has been completely worn through on one side. The outer edges are darkened and highly polished, apparently from frequent handling or gripping. The frontal surface displays a complex, deeply layered use patina whose richness, visual depth and nuanced variation cannot be adequately conveyed in a photograph. These traces attest to intensive, repeated use and underscore the object’s high ritual significance.
