ATTIE

FIGURE

This powerful depiction of a female figure, carved in wood, originates from the Attie people of the southeastern Ivory Coast. With raised arms supporting a container atop her head, the posture alludes to both physical strength and social role. The sculpted breasts, taut torso, and stylized hands and feet lend the figure a striking, almost monumental presence—despite its modest height of just 25.5 cm.

Particularly noteworthy are the wooden pegs embedded throughout the body, some of them visibly worn from use. These seal ritual cavities and serve as a testament to the figure’s spiritual significance. Her finely detailed coiffure and the carefully fitted iron insert further highlight the craftsmanship and importance of this work.
